Building Your Own Writing Desk
Some people enjoy simple woodworking projects as it can be very fulfilling to build something from scratch and then see the final product residing in your home alongside other furniture. One fairly simple item to build is the small writing desk. The reason this is a simple item to build is because you have the liberty to make the design as intricate or as basic as you like.
A writing desk is much smaller than a regular desk. It is great for fitting into rooms where there is not a lot of extra space, but where you need an additional surface to either use for writing on, or to sit a laptop on. You can buy completed desks, or unassembled desks online for varying prices and as such it is usually fairly easy to find something suitable that is within your price range.
If you prefer to build one yourself you may find, with the current cost of lumber, that you end up paying more than you would for a standard desk if you bought it. This fact does not deter the enthusiastic DIY’er, however, as there is definitely a lot of satisfaction in making something yourself. It can also be a great project to keep you busy and occupied while at home.
The first step in building your own writing desk is to either draw up your own plans or find some plans online. There are many different plans available online for free, with the better plans also giving explicit details on the type and size of wood to buy, how many screws you will need and what type of tools you will need to have available before starting the project.
Once you have your plan, the fun starts as you begin to assemble your materials. You will be able to choose your own wood and decide how you will finish it, do you want a white writing desk or do you want to stain the wood? Make sure you have everything you need before starting the project, as you will find it goes much more smoothly and even quickly if you do. You also should have a designated area set aside where you can leave any unfinished projects without worrying that they will be disturbed. A garage or even a garden shed is good for this, or a spare room if you have one in your home.
Once you have built your desk you may see areas where you could have improved or changed things slightly from the plans you followed. That is the great part about making your own furniture, there is always room for improvement and the challenge to do it even better next time is what spurs you on.
