Buying a Garden Shed
Thinking about buying a garden shed? Good. But before you lay out your hard-earned cash (or credit card), there a few things you need to consider. Is your property inside municipal boundaries? If it is, then you need to find out what restrictions your town or city impose as far as the placement, construction and use of the shed is concerned. Live in a development with a home owner’s association? Then check your home owner’s regulations to see if they specify what kind and where you can place a shed. And, just in case, try to find out if there are any deed restrictions on your property. There may be information on this in the papers you got at your house closing.
OK, regulations are cleared and you are ready to go. What are you going to do
with your garden shed? What do you need to store? Do you need lighting, or will windows be all you need to get things in and out? What kind of floor should it have? Will one of the prefabricated sheds do, or is this getting to be so complicated that you need to have the garden shed built from scratch? If you do, you can include electricity and running water, and make it one of your requirements, both interior and exterior.
How long do you expect to use the shed? (That is, how long do you expect to be in the same house?) Maybe, based on that estimate, a custom-built garden shed is the answer. You will certainly get everything you want if you have it custom built. The price tag, prorated over the number of years that you plan to use it, may make it reasonable in price.
However, for most of us, our choices in sheds are limited to the prefabricated ones. Thar’s not so bad. There are any manufacturers, with many options for exterior, interior conformation, floor and size. You just need to know which features are most important and find the garden shed satisfies the most requirements. To do this, try out the checklist and make notes of what you are looking for. Then go see what is out there and buy the best choice for you.
