Candle Holders and Candle Safety
Candles bring a romantic feel and warm glow into our surroundings, but they also bring safety issues. A burning candle in the wrong candle holder is an accident waiting to happen. The appropriate candle holder for any given candle is a real necessity. Any candle holder intended for use should hold the candle firmly, prevent tipping, and capture wax that escapes from the well of the candle.
Tapers are long and usually have an industry standard base size. Candle holders made for tapers will hold them firmly without any additional help and without allowing the candle to wobble. Sometimes florist clay or paper is used to ensure a firm fit between a taper and the candle holder and this practice is not a problem. If your taper does not fit firmly into the candle holder socket, you may need to find either tapers that do fit, or use a different candle holder. Candles made by hand may vary in the size of their bases and call for some searching to find a safe candle holder.
Pillar candles have a wide base that keeps them from tipping over. Holders for pillar candle should be enough larger than the base of the candle so that the candle does not hang over the edge of the candle holder. Candle holders with central spikes are even safer as they keep the candle affixed to the candle holder, so both have to be dumped over to start an accident.
Round candles require special holders that counter the round shape. To keep the candle upright and the molten wax in the candle, a round candle holder should have a cup large enough to hold the bottom quarter of the candle, or a spike to fix the candle in place. Round candle holders that extend the sides above the level of the flame are even safer choices for round candles. The point is to keep the burning candle from accidentally being nudged and taking off across the furniture or floor spilling wax and lighting other items on fire.
Candles are welcome editions to any decor as long as the fire element is kept under control. And remember, never leave a burning candle unattended or with only children in the room. The time it takes to start something on fire is only seconds, but the results may last a lifetime. You do not want to find out first-hand.
