Caring for Your Sideboard Table
Furniture can last for generations and through careful treatment, the piece can maintain its integrity. Sideboards are beautiful accent pieces and though sideboard table care is not that different than care of other wooden pieces, there are some specific tips that will preserve the piece.
Like other wooden pieces, sideboards need to be treated with care. If using it as a serving piece and food and beverages will be placed upon it, precautions
must be taken. Trivets need to be used so temperature rings don’t form and they should be placed under any dish with either hot or cold food on it. Any beverages should be placed on coasters and spills should be wiped immediately. Products can be used to remove heat, cold, or water rings, but once there, they are hard to remove completely, so the best measure is to try to avoid temperature or water damage.
When cleaning a sideboard, it is important to use wood specific products. Never use water based solutions, as they can seep in and damage the wood. Dusting products designed for wood are good, and be sure to use a soft, nonabrasive cloth so as not to scratch. Every so often, an application of wax will help maintain the polished look of the piece. Follow the product directions – the product is applied in a circular motion with a soft cloth and allowed to dry. After the wax is dry, another soft cloth is used to buff it. A few buffs may be necessary to achieve the desired shine. This is not needed upon every cleaning, but the sideboard table could benefit from a good waxing every few months.
Other tips for sideboard care include protecting it from objects with rough bottoms that can scratch. If these are desired on the piece, felt circles should be added to the objects so they do not scratch the surface. Never write on paper on the sideboard unless something is underneath, perhaps a blotter or even a magazine so the pressure from the writing instrument does not go through to indent the wood. If scratches occur, like with the temperature rings, products for repair are available, including wood type paint pens or other fillers, but again, once damage occurs, it can be difficult to remedy it completely.
With meticulous sideboard table care, this is a great piece that can last for generations and add beauty to any home.
