Chandeliers and Dining Rooms
When chandeliers were a new modern invention, in the Middle Ages, the first place they were used was the dining area. Admittedly the floor plan for the average affluent household of the 14th century was in no way like our own, but the basics started there — the family lives its life around the dining room. So when it is time to update the light fixture, think chandelier light.
These days the choices for what your chandelier will look like are now wide open. No longer are you confined to traditional crystal chandeliers with their tear drop baubles. You can decide that you want that look for your home’s decor and that is fine, because it is not from lack of variety. You can buy an antler chandelier (if it compliments your home decorating plan) or an iron chandelier or get an antique chandelier and make it a little funky by using colored bulbs. What matters is that your choices are virtually unlimited.
A chandelier’s lighting, as it casts its warm glow over your family, cannot be matched by other lighting fixtures. There is something special about how the light plays off the multiple bulbs and the way that the arms are able to cast light farther than if you had a flush-mounted ceiling light. The key when you are deciding which style to pick is size. First, how big is your dining area? How big is the table? Ideally your chandelier should be one-third to one-half the size of the dining room table. Other factors to consider are the height of your ceiling and other light sources in the room.
Here is what you are trying to avoid — you do not want a chandelier that dominates the room but you also don’t want a chandelier that is lost to view because it is too small. That is why the size of the room and the height of the ceiling matter so much. And it could be that you cannot go with your first choice of chandelier style because of one of these considerations. Let’s say you’ve fallen in love with the traditional tiered crystal chandelier. But when you measure the chandelier and your dining room you realize that the chandelier — this chandelier — will whack people in the head anytime they move because it is just too big for the space. Odds are you can find a variant of this chandelier style and it will be the perfect look and fit for your space. The key when you are shopping for a chandelier is to be flexible! Some people might even find that a chandelier just isn’t the right fit, and they choose something like a large pendant light instead.
