If you are someone who is looking to protect your futon mattress from the damages and normal wear and tear from life, then futon covers represent a great solution.  This is actually the main thrust behind their invention.  However, like all things in the home decorating field, fashion has to be a factor.  In your home, the last thing you want is just some functional piece that has no aesthetic qualities about it that you have to look at day in and day out.  If this was the case, then you probably wouldn’t those clear plastic covers like your grandmother might have used to protect her furniture.  Those were probably the best protection around, but they were not the best to look at or comfortable to sit on.

A futon is such a flexible piece of furniture that it can be used in many ways.  Let’s say that you are someone who enjoys entertaining.  If this is the case, you probably purchased that futon because of its flexible nature in terms of seating and sleeping.  It may or may not have come with some sort of protective cover or even frame upon purchase.  In most cases, these accessories are nice, but they shouldn’t be considered to be the last ones you’ll ever need.  Now, if you select a custom frame or have one built, then you may never need to consider one again.

This is not the case with that cover that came with it, fortunately or unfortunately.  However, since they can be so inexpensive for a simple one, don’t fret over purchasing more than one futon slipcover.  They are so simple to use that you might find yourself switching them out whenever your mood strikes.  But before buying a new one, you should pay attention to the small details. Remember, small details make the difference, especially in home decorating!

Another thing that I would like to point out is that futons aren’t the only things that can benefit from a cover.  In fact, other pieces of furniture can be covered as well.  Take an ottoman for example.  If you have just purchased a new one, it might be a wise idea to invest in an ottoman slipcover to protect it.  Another scenario would be if you had an older ottoman that was a bit worn out.  Purchasing a slipcover for it would give it a whole new look for a very low price – many slipcovers cost around $25.  This is a great alternative to buying a new ottoman!

As you may already know, if you’ve done any other searching online, there are a wide variety of colors, sizes and materials. That makes your buying decision even harder.  You can choose to purchase a futon cover made entirely of cotton, or you can choose to purchase one that is made of polyester. If you are someone who suffers with allergies or sensitivities, then you might consider one of the ‘newer’ organic cotton futon covers. Organic products are popping up everywhere from foods to clothing and home products.  The reason has to do with how they are processed, typically.  These materials have less chemical treatment and are less likely to off-gas potentially harmful or irritating volatile compounds inside your home or bedroom that you and your family will be breathing in.

For this reason and those concerning flexibility and ease of use, you can see how a futon cover can give you much greater peace of mind.
