Get Precise Measurements With A Caliper

Published by at 11:30 pm under Uncategorized

When attempting to perform precise work in the workshop there are a few tools that can prove to be essential to the job. This is especially so when precise measurements are necessary for the pieces that must be cut to come together. One way to take a measurement is by using a ruler or a tape measure. This will give you a pretty good idea of the length of a piece of wood for example, but it won’t give you the precise measurement and sometimes, it’s precision that counts.

This is where a caliper comes in very handy. A caliper is a tool that is designed to take an accurate measure every time. In days gone by this electronic digital calipermeasure was done by reading an analogue dial, the display similar to the markings on a ruler. These days the technology has been improved and it is now possible to buy an electronic digital caliper.

With a digital caliper an LCD screen is attached to the caliper and the precise length that has been measured is displayed down to the one-thousandth. This gives you an incredibly precise reading on whatever it is you are measuring and ensures that the quality of the work you are doing is high.

Digital calipers can be found with dual mode settings so that the display can give you the result in either metric format or in inches. You can also lock the readout so that if the measurement is taken in a hard to reach place or in low light, the readout will still be saved to be read at a later date.

Not only can you take measurements of objects from their exterior points, a caliper also allows you to measure the interior distance between two points such as the inside of a box or pipe. You can also measure the depth of a hole with the reading in each case getting displayed on the digital readout.

An outstanding example of a quality digital caliper is the Fowler/Sylvac Ultra-Cal Mark III Electronic Caliper that has all of the basic requirements needed in an electronic caliper.

Technology has certainly come a long way from the days of taking a measurement with a caliper and then putting the caliper on a ruler to find out what the answer is.
