Glass Ground Cover

Considering mulch or rocks to surround a tree or to border a flower bed? Wish there was something more colorful than red lava gravel? Or red bark mulch whose color will fade to gray-brown over time? Or something besides white rocks? What if you could have all the colors of the rainbow?

Well, there is something really great to replace rocks and wood chips: glass ground cover. It is recycled glass, formed into gravel shaped pieces in several sizes and in a dozen colors. Red, yellow, green, several blues, purple and gray, glass ground cover can be laid in bands and swirls to create beds of color that do not need to be watered or fed. You can create a stream with no running water. You can xeriscape your yard so that it looks good and requires little work except for a couple of  bags of glass every couple of years, maybe.

Here are a few more ideas that you can use ground glass for:  Lay out your favorite sports team logo in the appropriate colors on your front lawn, and let everyone know who you support. Make a rainbow that shines in the sun without rain clouds. Embed the glass in polyurethane to cover your pool surround. You can even include the glass in the pool lining to make it sparkle. Use glass around the bricks in a brick path to make it look new. There are many landscape uses for this wonderful glass.

One supplier, of several, is the American Specialty Glass Company. They will sell you a sample case so you can see the glass in person before ordering. I always find seeing and fingering the product an advantage, and an alternate to the disappointment of unrealized expectations.

So, if you are reworking your yard or garden, and want to cut down on water usage but still want color in your yard, consider glass ground cover. You can save water, use a recycled glass product, and look good, all at the same time.
