Green Choices For Bedroom Furniture
If you are someone whom has left a slightly larger carbon footprint than you would like, then there are ways to make your life a little “greener”. While in the kitchen, it is relatively easy to do, with the full line of kitchen supplies which are Eco-friendly. When it comes to being more green in the bedroom it is difficult to know where to begin. Here’s a little help.
Preparation of the room:
If you go for a renovation from top to bottom of your room, you want to start
with changing the color of the walls or even changing the curtains. If you decide to start with the painting there are paints that are a little greener than normal. When you shop, look for labels that have no chemicals volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), or at least small quantities. When it comes to your curtains, seek environmentally friendly materials, such as cotton or hemp, which are both renewable resources.
The bed:
You can dress up your bed and still stick to a greener philosophy! There are more and more organic fabrics on the market today. For starters, there is now full line of organic cotton sheets. Even the big discount stores now stock organic cotton furnishings. Also, make sure the cushions are made of natural materials like hulls. Worried about the stuffing in your pillow? Look for pillows with recycled polyester filling.
Recycled furniture:
Buying second hand furniture and antique furniture is a very green choice. There are many antique shops and vintage furniture shops, in most towns and cities, full of beautiful pieces of furniture that still have a lot of life left. You never know what you might find in these shops. One time, in a local second hand shop, I found a piece of mirrored bedroom furniture which was simply stunning and a bargain. Most mirrored bedroom tables cost a small fortune, but this one didn’t fortunately. Enjoy a stroll down memory lane by visiting vintage and antique stores and keep an eye on the furniture that will complement your existing bedroom suite.
Low energy light bulbs:
The last thing you should consider is how to read in your bedroom. There are all kinds of high-efficiency lamps to choose from which are not only a lot greener but will save you in electricity costs. It is now also possible to buy warm toned bulbs which are better in the bedroom than the older types which had a rather cold bluish tinge.

I thought adjustable beds were used in hospitals and by retired people? That has certainly been true in the past, but in the last 10-15 years or so there has been a huge change in the way adjustable beds are used. They are very much a lifestyle purchase these days for the average home. People read books, newspapers in bed, watch TV, work on their computers…did you know nearly half of all LCD TV’s end up in the bedroom. Also over 80% of us experience a bad back at some time in our life, and the zero gravity position is just perfect for sleeping or sitting in bed.
