Ideas for Decorating a Fireplace Area
There are many reasons people have difficulty decorating a fireplace area. Many people make the mistake of putting too many items in the area whereas others have the opposite problem and leave the fireplace area empty. However, fireplaces are generally very beautiful and to not make the effort to find good accent pieces is a huge missed opportunity.
You may find it helpful to look for some inspiration. TV, the internet, and magazines are all great sources for fireplace decoration ideas. Whether you are just looking at the fireplace area in your favorite sitcom that was surely designed by a professional decorator or looking through a catalog with purpose-built fireplace décor scenes, you are sure to come across something that can be a good starting point for your own fireplace area.
Fireplace tools and other elements are always at home in a fireplace area. Metal tools with detailed handles, hand-carved fire bellows, and decorative wood racks always look great. Pictures are often placed on the wall above fireplaces for a good reason- they look terrific there. Choose a painting that ties into the theme of your room and then find some coordinating knick-knacks such as vases or candles to place on the mantle. Mirrors can also be used if you want to make the room look bigger. Framed photos work really well on the mantel as well.
Also consider that the mantel area can be used as a place to display decorations that relate to the time of year. Christmas in particular is a great time to decorate the mantel. Garland draped over the mantel with ornaments hanging from the garland is a classic look. Don’t forget to hang the stockings! In spring, you could put artificial grass and some decorative bunnies and eggs in the area. Constantly changing the scene on the mantel is a great way to keep the room interesting and fresh.
Remember not to place anything that is flammable too close to the fireplace due to the possibility of stray sparks igniting them. Keep everything a safe distance away when the fireplace is in use. If you get your chimney liner inspected or cleaned every year, ask the technician to look at your decorations and identify any potential fire hazards. If you’re unsure, use something else or ask your local fire department for advice.
With a bit of caution and a lot of creativity, you can take the fireplace area in so many different directions. The sky is really the limit when it comes to fireplace decorations.
