Leather Furniture Lasts a Lifetime
In today’s world, nearly everything is disposable and sadly, that goes for furniture as well. If people could overlook the initial high price of leather furniture though, they’d realize that the extra money spent up front would translate into something that would last a lifetime. Leather, unlike other materials, improves with age and is four time stronger. The frame of the furniture, something else many people don’t consider, is also of higher quality, often being constructed from expensive hardwoods like oak or cherry, and again this adds to the life expectancy of the piece.
Caring for leather is also easy. Spill a glass of red wine on fabric furniture and it’s going to leave a stain but that same spilled wine on leather, if wiped up quickly, isn’t really a big deal. Like any piece of furniture however, you do have to dust occasionally, which can be done with a damp cloth. The manufacturer may also suggest the application of a creme conditioner about every six months.
When buying leather, you pay more to get less. By that I mean that the better the cowhide is cosmetically, meaning less scars or other irregular marks, the higher the price. Hides that do have a lot of these marks will first have to be dyed to cover up those marks. This makes the leather a little harder and so the price is a little lower.
Top grain cowhide on the other hand is only semi-dyed which allows the natural beauty of the leather show through. Top grain hides are also the most supple and soft. They are also the most breathable as well which means they’ll be more comfortable during the summer months.
At the beginning of this article, I mentioned that a lot of modern furniture such as a cheap ottoman tray or folding chair is for the most part disposable but leather furniture retains a lot of its value. If you ever decide that you want to get rid of a piece of furniture, you’ll find there are a lot of people that will be happy to pay you a decent price.
