Maintaining House Shutters

Published by at 9:04 pm under Uncategorized

When you have shutters installed on your house, basic maintenance is inevitable.  The type of shutters that you have will determine what type of work has to be done to keep them looking and working well.  In this post I want to share with you how to do this on different types of shutters so you can have an idea of what it will take once they are installed on your home.

Wooden house shutters take the most work to keep them in good shape.  wooden shuttersWood and paint deteriorate over time, so every few years they will  have to be taken down and refinished.  This usually involves removing the paint, sanding them smooth, repainting, and applying a weather proof finish.  It is a lot of work when you have a lot of shutters on your home, but it is well worth it when they save your windows in a big storm!  The key to making this work the best is to do this before they begin to rot.  If you wait too long, they take a lot more work to get them back into working order.  Be sure to check all of the hardware and closures to make sure that they are in good working order.

Vinyl and aluminum shutters are much easier to maintain.  Since these are normally non functional shutters, it’s really just a matter of keeping them looking nice.  Most vinyl and aluminum shutters only have to be repainted every 10 years or so.  To keep these looking great, all you have to do is take them down from the windows and give them a quick clean with soap and a hose.  Getting the dirt and grime off of vinyl shutters every year will help make sure that the paint lasts a very long time.

Like everything else in the home, some maintenance is necessary to make sure that they last a long time.  Be sure to take care of your shutters so that they are there when you need them to be!
