My Basic Outdoor Kitchen On A Budget

I admit it, I watch design shows all the time.   My latest idea is to design my own outdoor kitchen on a budget.   One of the first things to be decided on is a gas grill. I want to be able to purchase the best that I can for the most reasonable price.  That will require some shopping around and even possibly buying last year’s model of gas grill, which is fine with me.  Even a small scratch and dent  grill is ok if the price is reduced.   It would be hard to have a really great backyard kitchen without one.  Everyone likes to cook outside and smell fresh food cooking on the grill.

outdoor kitchensLet’s see what else am I going to need, plenty of counter space to spread out on.  The little shelves that the gas grills have don’t have enough room for me.  I knock stuff off all the time of those all the time on my old grill.  So plenty of counter space on both sides of the grill would be very handy as would including at least a medium size stainless steel sink for washing or rinsing things you might drop on the ground.

Outdoor kitchen cabinets or outdoor cabinets of some kind are a must have.  I need somewhere to store all of the gadgets and pots and cast-iron skillets that I might need to use on the grill after all and there isn’t any room in my interior kitchen.   Plus there is always the prerequisite roll of paper towels, grill cleaners, grill brushes, utensils, paper plates, foil, that kind of thing that is always in your kitchen but to have it handy within reach of your outdoor cooking area would be great.

A small outdoor fridge always comes in handy but if you can’t afford one in the beginning, leave a space for it in your design to be added later.  In the meantime, use some sort of galvanized bucket or sink to put ice in to keep drinks and condiments cold.  Anything will work in a pinch.
