An oak floor is a durable clean surface. There are two species of oak usually used in flooring. Many finishes can be applied to the flooring to protect it from wear. Hardwoods used for flooring offer you many decorating options.

Flooring made of oak is a hard strong covering for your floor. Finished the right way it is scratch and scuff resistant. It is easy to keep clean and generally only takes a broom and dust pan. It has advantages over carpet if you have allergies. Carpet cannot be cleaned as good as a hardwood floor. Many things including germs can get trapped in a carpet floor.

Two primary species of oak are used in flooring. White oak and red oak are made in several different grades. There is a clear grade that is free of defects, a contractors grade that has a few knots but no noticable voids, and a rustic grade that has imperfectons including big knots and voids. These grades are different priced with the clear grade being the most expensive. There are solid oak and a veneered oak used in flooring materials.

There are many choices of finishes on oak flooring. It can be stained any color you desire or remain clear. A poly is applied to the floor in multiple thick coats. A prefinished floor is stained and varnished gefore it is installed. Prefinished oak used for flooring comes in a select few colors.

To install an oak hardwood floor you must snap a straight line to follow with the first row. Using a floor nailer you nail the flooring through the tongue every 10 to 12 inches. The flooring comes in narrow strips in random lengths. When installing you want to tap the pieces tight and stagger all joints. Your oak hardwood floor will give you years of pleasure after it is installed, especially if you go with something of high quality like a quarter sawn oak floor.
