Shopping For Wicker Furnishings

I love how wicker furniture has a light, airy feel that can brighten any room or outdoor space. That is why it appeals to so many decorators today. It is a popular outdoor option because it looks so much nicer than plastic furniture, and will last longer, too. Indoors, it can be a great accent to any bright, cheery space.

When shopping for wicker items, there are many factors to keep in mind. Are wicker furnitureyou shopping for collectors pieces? Do you want to furnish an indoor area, or will your furnishings be strictly for outdoor use? Do you prefer natural wicker or synthetic? What is the difference between the two? Hopefully, we can answer your questions here.

If you are a collector, you probably know that the most sought-after wicker items are from the era of the Wakefield Rattan Company and the Hayward Brothers, circa 1870 to 1930. Before buying, do your homework: find identification and price guides that will help you determine what styles you are looking for. You can use these guides to match the markings on wicker furniture for authenticity. Be sure to ask the dealer about the piece’s history, and keep in mind that damaged items may be costly to restore. When you find that perfect piece, it will add character and history to your home.

However, not everyone seeks after antique items. Some simply want a cheery way to furnish a patio or bedroom with wicker bedroom furniture for instance. Before making a purchase, determine what type of material you want your wicker to be.

Most commonly made from rattan, an abundant, non-wood material, natural wicker will appeal to those who opt for environmentally-friendly furnishings.  Rattan fits nicely into this category.  Rattan is strong and durable, and will not splinter like wood. It can be stained or painted to match any décor, and is very easy to maintain. Natural wicker is very resilient to temperature extremes, and may be left outside all year. Consider natural wicker if you want durable, quality furnishings that will hold up over time.

Very similar in looks to its natural cousin, synthetic wicker is usually made from resin or vinyl. It is popular for outdoor use because it is very resilient to harsh environments, and may be left outside year-round. It is often a less costly alternative to natural All weather wicker furniture, but it still looks great anywhere.

Whatever type of wicker furniture items you select, make sure their style matches your personal taste, and you will enjoy them for years to come.
