Simple Steps to Refacing Kitchen Cabinets
Kitchen cabinet refacing is an economical way of creating an entirely new look in your kitchen. It involves either replacing doors and drawers, and painting the trim, or more commonly, using a laminate veneer with a self adhesive backing. For this article, we will discuss refacing cabinets with a veneer.
When you are ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work, make sure you
have the following tools handy:
- A power drill
- A tri-square
- A utility knife (and a sharp blade or backup.)
- De-greasing cleaner
- Drop cloths
- A hand saw
- A screwdriver
- A straight edge
- A hammer and nail set
- Sandpaper (about 150 grit)Wood glue/ Carpenter’s glue.
You can find many styles of laminate veneer as they are manufactured in hundreds of designs to create any look. Once you have decided on the look you want, it is time to get to work cleaning.
The best way to get the build-up of grime from cooking off of your cabinets is to use a good de-greasing cleaner. Be sure to use clean cloths and keep replacing them, as they get dirty. It is much easier to remove your cabinet doors to clean them, and to clean the trim. When you take the doors off, do not forget to mark them!
Once you have cleaned your cabinets thoroughly, give them a good scuffing with your sandpaper, preferably wrapped around a block of wood or sanding block. Take a clean cloth and wipe away the residue, now you can begin to apply your veneer.
-For exposed ends of cabinets, glue plywood over them before applying veneer.
-Taking a piece of the veneer, line it up properly. Once you have the edge perfect, begin to press down as you peel the backing off. Do not make the mistake of taking off the backing first.
-Repeat this process, and then use your utility knife to trim the veneer until its perfect.
