Most people do not change the decor of their homes very often. Couches, chairs and other accessory items usually stay the same for many years. Often times, for this reason it is important to match the color of carpet to these items. Try to pick out one or two accent colors you really enjoy in your home and see if you can match the carpet to those colors. This should greatly cut down on your choices and will guarantee you something that will work with your decor.

The other deciding factor in which color you should choose for your carpet would be how visible soil will be. For older people with no kids at home this may be simpler. However, if you have little ones still running around, a good darker color such as a brown will greatly help hide soil that will no doubt be tracked in. Also, multicolored carpets are great at hiding stains caused by spills. Empty-nesters and older people can often time get by with a nice lighter color. However, if you have regular visits from small grand-kids you may want to keep darker colors in mind.

Tip 1: It is recommended that you purchase more tiles than you will need to complete your project. Slate tiles have the tendency to break. Keep in mind you will need extra tiles for trim around corners.

Tip 2: It is recommended that you prepare your floor by checking to see that the floor on which the tile will go is flat. To do this, put a straight edge on the floor and checking for gaps between it and the floor. Mark gaps on the floor; clean the area and paint it with latex primer. Pour self-leveling mortar over the area, then smooth with straightedge.

Tip 3: Before mixing the mortar do a trial layout. This allows you to utilize fewer slate tiles and cut as few as possible.

When mixing the mortar, mix only what you can use before it hardens. Start by mixing enough to fill a 3 1/2 quart bucket, then adjust the amount as you gain experience. Keep the mortar sticky, if the mortar won’t stick to your fingers, it won’t stick to the tiles.

Tip 4: Set tiles by hinging down, twisting slightly back and forth, then placing spacers and sliding into the final position. Spacers should be placed on end so they can easily be removed. If you use them flat, you can use fewer spacers but they are much harder to remove.

Tip 5: Damp cure the grout by misting with water twice a day for three days. Do not damp cure tinted grout. Damp curing can dissolve the tint and leave an inconsistent color. When grout is thoroughly dry, apply tile and grout cleaner with a sponge, then scrub the surface with a stiff brush. Rinse and dry before applying sealer.
